The Rhinos fell to the Casper Coyotes in overtime with a close score of 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon in their fourth and final game of the Western States Hockey League showcase.
The Rhinos looked to set the tone of the game when Ivan Vilcauskas gave El Paso the lead less than three minutes into the period. Soon after, however, the Coyotes attacked their way onto the scoreboard and tied the game at one. In the eight minutes following Dominik Capek’s game tying goal, El Paso earned incurred 14 penalty minutes while Casper earned half as many. Capitalizing with a power play goal, Thomas Giller gave Casper a 2-1 lead as the first half concluded.
Adam Cech, with the help of Evan Camba and Jayden Ritchie, evened the game with a power play goal at two at 16:40. Throughout the second half, Alex Johanson and former Rhino Zach Lawson earned coincidental minors as did Adam Cech and Spartan Austin Parrish. Despite the many penalty minutes for the latter half of the second period, both teams kept the score at 2, forcing overtime. With only five second left in the first overtime, Dominik Capek slipped the puck past El Paso netminder Angus Campbell and scored the game winning goal. With a game four final of 3-2, the Rhinos finished the WSHL Showcase with two wins and two losses. They play their first series of 2017 when they face off against the Thunder in Wichita on January 13, 14, and 15.
