El Paso starts its season 3-0 to pace the Mid-West Division along with the San Antonio Diablos after the opening weekend of play in the Western States Hockey League.

Returning forward Billy Krueger started the scoring with an unassisted goal 5:14 into the first period, while new Rhino Anthony Knuth put away a feed from David Fegler for El Paso’s second goal just 1:52 into the third period.

Team captain Nick Gorup fed John Scorcia three minutes later, while Eric LaBounty scored from Fegler to round out the scoring at 15:12.

El Paso outshot the home team, 60-21, Sunday night. The Rhinos pounded the Outlaws with 179 shots over the three-game series, outscoring their hosts, 21-9, as they begin defense of their Thorne Cup championship.

El Paso will return home tonight and has the next two weekends off before heading to the Metroplex to split a weekend of games between the Dallas Hawks and Texas Renegades, Oct. 10-12.

The Rhinos first home series will be against last season’s opponents in the Mid-West Division Championship series, the Tulsa Renegades, Friday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Oct. 26. Players from last season’s championship team will be returning as El Paso will be awarding past and present Rhinos their championship rings and unfurling its championship banner in the series opener, Oct. 24.
