Home Opener Preview

Oct 29, 2015

The El Paso Rhinos’ home opener will be against the Wichita Thunder on October 30th. The series will consist of three straight games over the course of the weekend.

Even though the Rhinos aren’t off to the undefeated start that they would’ve liked, they come into this series with a solid 2-1 record. The Rhinos are the only team in the WSHL to have played only three games this season, which should give them an advantage in terms of longevity throughout the year.

The Thunder on the other hand have performed a little worse than average, as their record would display (7-8). That is no reason to expect this series should be three go-ahead wins, however. The Thunder have managed to win four of their last six, which were all away games as well. Playing away from home certainly does not seem to faze this young and talented squad that had 51 shots on goal in their most recent win.

The players to watch on both teams this week include two forwards who will provide an enticing matchup for fans. Jack Mcclelland of the Wichita Thunder was hungry for goals in his last matchup against the Cheyenne Stampede, and he filled himself up with three of seven goals scored on the night. It will be interesting to see how the Rhinos’ defense will hold up against this elite goal-scorer.

Joe Roach is my player to watch this week for the Rhinos. The Thunder have already given up the most goals in the Mid-Western division with 65 total goals allowed on the season, so make sure to keep an eye on Roach who already has two goals on the season.

Defensive stability will be the key for the Rhinos to get the series sweep this weekend because of the fact that the Thunder are not afraid to put the puck in the back of the net. Head Coach Corey Herman should have his hands full in what should be another exciting matchup this weekend.

This weekend, players will also wear Halloween themed jerseys that will be up for auction on Saturday. In addition to the regular in-game promotions, there will also be a costume contest and free candy to all children in attendance. On Friday, the first 500 fans will receive a free schedule magnet as well.
