It has been tough sledding for the El Paso Rhinos this season, but they took five of a possible six points in a home series against the Ontario Avalanche over the weekend.

The Rhinos almost let a big early led get away, but picked up a much-needed win in Friday’s series opener. 

El Paso scored four times in the first 12:49 of the game to lead, 4-0. 

The Avalanche chipped away at the lead and ,Alec Suquette scored with 58 seconds left to get Ontario within a goal, but they were unable to get the equalizer past Benjamin Dennis, who made 22 saves for the Rhinos.

Daniel Cepila stopped all 17 shots he faced over the final two periods and ended the game with 28 saves for the Avalanche.

Saturday’s game went back and forth before being decided in a shootout.  The Avalanche came out on top, 4-3.

El Paso out-shot Ontario, 38-14, but Filip Subrt kept the Avs in the game with 35 saves, then came through in the shootout.

Ontario scored twice in the first 4:30 of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but the Rhinos battled back and led, 3-2, going into the third period.

Ontario’s Marc Janisch scored with 13:59 left to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Jakub Husa dished out assists on four of five El Paso goals in the Rhino’s 5-1 win on Sunday.

Connor Beaudet scored twice and Ryan Buttazonni stopped 16 of 17 shots for El Paso.
